Berita 24 English - On Thursday, when she died at the age of 96, world leaders paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth. People in Britain and around the world also paid their respects to a woman who had been the face of her country for more than 70 years.

On a rainy night in London, thousands of people gathered outside Buckingham Palace in the city's centre. Some of them left flowers at the palace's black iron gates. The same thing happened outside the queen's home in Windsor Castle. Outside the palace, black cabs lined up to show respect to the Queen.

Billboards with pictures of Elizabeth were put up in central London's Piccadilly Circus and the city's Canary Wharf financial district, as well as in New York's Times Square. Outside the British Consulate General in New York, flowers were put down.

People came to Tea & Sympathy, a restaurant in New York that served traditional British food, to pay their respects by having a cup of tea.

Nicky Perry, the owner of Tea & Sympathy, said, "It's like your mom died, because we've grown up with her and her family." "So many people have come here today crying their eyes out. Men. Americans."

In Washington, the U.S. flag was lowered to half-staff to honour the death of a monarch whose legacy, according to President Joe Biden, "will loom large in the pages of British history and in the story of our world."

European cities also held memorials for her.

Flowers and candles were left outside the British Embassy in Berlin, and the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen," was played outside the Festival Buildings in Venice.

At midnight, the Eiffel Tower in Paris went dark as a tribute to the Queen.

In Brazil, the big statue of Christ the Redeemer that looks out over Rio de Janeiro was lit up in the red, blue, and white colours of the United Kingdom's flag. In Australia, the sails of the Sydney Opera House are going to be lit up.

Before the start of the women's semi-final between Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and Caroline Garcia of France at the U.S. Open in New York, fans and players paused for a moment of silence.
