Berita 24 English - Malaysian officials may consider revising its regulation on palm kernel cake exports, which can be used as animal feed, to help stabilize the country's chicken supply, the commodities ministry said on Tuesday.
Malaysia announced last week that it will halt all chicken exports in June until output and expenses stabilize in the face of rising prices.
Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said in a statement that the commodities ministry will "conduct conversations with other stakeholders to evaluate our export policy on palm kernel cake in favor of domestic broilers."
She explained, "Right now, a lot of our palm kernel cake is sold for the European cattle business."
She added the ministry will examine how to ensure that palm kernel waste is available as animal feed for the domestic poultry business as soon as possible.
Grain and soybeans, which Malaysia imports, are commonly used in chicken feed. However, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and unpredictable weather patterns have resulted in a global shortage, according to Zuraida.
"As a result, chickens were fed less, causing livestock to grow more slowly than usual, so limiting the quantity of chickens," she explained.
Malaysia is the world's second-largest producer of palm oil and exporter of palm kernel cake, which it claims may be used to replace imported feed.
