Berita 24 English -  A top U.S. official indicated that Myanmar's government, which seized power last year, is unlikely to be able to overcome the insurgents fighting its authority and should restore democracy.

Derek Chollet, the State Department's counsellor, observed, "It is impossible to see how they could really expect they can prevail." "They are falling behind. Their military is experiencing severe losses."

Chollet told Reuters and another journalist on Friday in Bangkok that the military regime is becoming increasingly isolated internationally and locally, and that it should end the fighting and return to democracy.

Since ousting the elected administration of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, the junta has crushed protesters with fatal force and mass arrests.

Civilians have taken up arms against police and army in response to a coalition of lightly armed militants' demand for a people's rebellion. The junta has designated the coalition as terrorists.

On Sunday, a military official declined to comment on Chollet's remarks.

The ambassador is travelling to Thailand, Singapore, and Brunei to follow up on last month's summit between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Chollet noted that in addition to sanctions, the United States is engaging with ASEAN and countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia on Myanmar.

He wished for China to be a "part of the solution" in Myanmar.
