Berita 24 English - Myanmar's ruling junta has criticized what it called "reckless and interfering" foreign comments about a rare execution order against two well-known opposition figures. It also accused the countries that called for their release of helping terrorism.
Last week, the UN, the U.S. State Department, and France all criticized the decision to turn down the appeals of a veteran activist and a former lawmaker. This decision clears the way for the first executions in the country in decades.
On Tuesday, a foreign ministry statement was published in a state newspaper. It rejected the criticism from other countries and voiced "strong protest" at France for calling the Myanmar junta a "illegitimate military regime" and meddling in its affairs.
"The ministry protests and objects in the strongest terms to the irresponsible and careless statements and remarks," it said. It also said that the comments from the U.S., France, and the U.N. were "aiding terrorism" and ignoring what it called "violent attacks against authorities."
Kyaw Min Yu, a longtime democracy activist, and Phyo Zeyar Thaw, a lawmaker for the former ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, were both found guilty of treason and terrorism and sentenced to death by a military tribunal in January.
It is not clear when they will be put to death or how they pleaded in their trials, which were mostly held in secret in Myanmar.
Justice activists say that the junta runs the courts and keeps its opponents from getting fair trials.
The military has been criticized all over the world for killing protesters and people who didn't agree with the February 2021 coup.
The United Nations has said that their investigations show that the military has killed a lot of people and done other bad things. The junta has said that it wants to bring peace and order back to the country.
