Berita 24 English - Thailand's prime minister convened an emergency meeting with his economic teams on Thursday to examine economic issues in the wake of the Federal Reserve's policy tightening in the United States, according to a government official.
The conference will focus on steps to combat rising energy prices and inflation, according to deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek, who did not provide further specifics.
Reuters was unable to confirm who will be attending the meeting or any of the other topics on the agenda at the time of publication.
According to local media, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha will meet with teams that include Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow, Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, and central bank personnel.
In May, Thailand's headline inflation rate reached an almost 14-year high of 7.1 percent. The central bank warned on Tuesday that it was prepared to deal with any extreme volatility in the baht, which is already at a five-year low against the dollar.
Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, Governor of the Bank of Thailand, stated on Monday that delaying rate hikes for too long would be bad for the economy as inflation continues to rise.
