Berita 24 English -  On Tuesday, Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki stated that the government's goal of balancing the primary budget by fiscal 2025 has not changed.

Suzuki made the comment after news broke on Monday that the government had removed the goal year from a draft of its mid-year long-term economic policy.

Suzuki told reporters after a cabinet meeting that "public finances are the cornerstone of a country's confidence."

"In order to achieve fiscal reform in the medium to long term, it's critical to continue with economic and fiscal policies to aim for a primary budget surplus and a stable debt-to-GDP ratio," Suzuki added.

The senior economic advisory council of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida confirmed in January that the current circumstances did not necessitate a modification in the fiscal 2025 target year for reaching a primary budget surplus.

"That policy was not changed," Suzuki noted.
