Berita 24 English - With his latest Cannes competition entry, "Decision to Leave," Park Chan-wook, well known for his horrific Vengeance Trilogy, is breaking new ground.

Contrary to popular belief, the romantic drama about a detective and a murder suspect who fall in love with each other contains little violence or nuance.

When asked if the picture indicates a new path for him at a Cannes press conference, Park remarked, "When something isn't in the film you question why isn't it there and the other way around."

"I wanted to make a film for grownups when I first started planning the project. Everyone said, "Oh, it's going to be a really sexual, sexy film," and I thought to myself, "How strange that that's what people think when I say I want to produce a film for adults," so I did the exact opposite.""

Park Hae-il plays investigator Hae-joon, who is investigating the death of a mountain climber who died after falling off a cliff. When Hae-joon meets the man's wife, a mystery Chinese woman, her suspicions grow as she exhibits no signs of grief over her loss. He begins to observe her, and the two develop affections for one another over time.

"There are many police stories, but they are usually gruff and violent, whereas the detective in this case is quite clean-cut and kind. "In order to answer all these mysteries, he doesn't use violence, or at least as little as possible," actor Park Hae-il stated.

"I intended to portray a different type of cop through my performance," she says "said the actor

"Decision to Leave" is Park's fourth film to premiere at Cannes, after "Old Boy" won the Grand Prix in 2004 and "Thirst" tied for the Jury Prize in 2009. This year, it is one of 21 films competing for the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or.
