Berita 24 English - Mexico's Economy Ministry said on Monday that it had accepted a request from the United States to investigate potential labor violations at a Panasonic auto parts facility in the northern border city of Reynosa.

The request from the United States Trade Representative (USTR) earlier this month was the third such complaint filed by the US under a new trade agreement aimed at improving working conditions in Mexico.

Mexico's Economy Ministry said it sent its answer on Thursday and will analyze the matter with the Labor Ministry to see if worker rights were infringed under the 2020 USMCA (USMCA).

Panasonic has been accused of signing a union contract behind workers' backs and firing several dozen employees who protested, according to SNITIS, the Mexican union that petitioned for the investigation.

Panasonic Corporation of North America stated that it "respects and supports" the rights to free association and collective bargaining, and that it does not believe these rights have been violated. The Japanese conglomerate's unit also stated that it will work with Mexican authorities.
