On Monday, US President Joe Biden enraged China by appearing to herald a shift in the US policy of "strategic ambiguity" on Taiwan, suggesting the US would intervene militarily if China attacked the island.
However, he stated on Tuesday that US policy had not changed.
The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army stated it recently conducted a patrol and drill in the airspace and water around Taiwan.
According to state television, the command's spokeswoman, Shi Yi, stated, "This is a solemn warning against current cooperation between the United States and Taiwan."
"The United States' hypocrisy and futility on the Taiwan issue is hypocritical and fruitless," he remarked.
The Taiwan Strait remains a potential military flashpoint because China has never renounced the use of force to annex democratically ruled Taiwan.
While the US maintains a "one China" policy, recognizing only Beijing, it has pledged to "assist give Taiwan with the ability to defend itself" under the Taiwan Relations Act.
Despite this, it has long avoided stating how it would respond if the island were attacked by the Chinese.
