Berita 24 English -
Thailand's exports increased by a more than expected 13.09 per cent year on year in April, the fastest pace in three years, the commerce ministry said Tuesday.

This compares to a 9.6 per cent increase forecast in a Reuters poll and an 8.47 per cent increase in March.

April exports, a key driver of Thai growth, were boosted by increased shipments of automobiles and auto parts, rubber, computers, and oil, according to a briefing by ministry official Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit.

"Exports increased significantly in the majority of critical markets," he said, noting that the rollout of vaccines in several countries aided the global economic recovery.

Thailand's exports to China, the country's largest market in April, increased 21.9 per cent year on year, while those to the United States increased 9 per cent. Those to the European Union increased 52.5 per cent.

Earlier this year, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit stated that exports would continue to improve.

Imports increased 29.79 per cent year over year in April, exceeding the forecasted 25.1% increase, resulting in a $182 million trade surplus for the month.

Exports increased 4.78 per cent year over year in January-April, while imports increased 13.85 per cent, resulting in a $698 million trade surplus.
